Kava is an evergreen shrub with a long history of use in the Polynesian islands in the South Pacific, its native home. It grows to a height of ten feet and has heart shaped leaves, but the roots are what are normally used in medicine. They are bitter, aromatic, pungent, and have a numbing effect in the mouth. Kava has been used in Polynesian herbal medicine for at least 3,000 years. It is said to enhance memory, mental acuity, and sensory perception. Kava can have a very mild sedative and euphoric effect. It is used in social and ceremonial settings. It is often used to greet guests, enhance communication in business agreements, or settle disputes because of its ability to induce a state of relaxation and goodwill among reconciling parties. When Captain James Cook landed on Tahiti in 1768, the native Tahitians greeted him with kava kava. True Noble Kava Kava is considered a higher quality kava kava (as opposed to Tudei varieties) and researchers believe may also have less negative side affects. A cup of True Noble Kava Kava is the perfect way to unwind!
